Bayern Munich sold Joshua Zirkzee to Bologna last summer. It’s been a crazy trip for the Dutchman over the last few years, who has a history of traveling about — and could do so again.
Zirkzee traveled to Parma, Italy, in the winter of 2021. He had a loan spell at RSC Anderlecht in Belgium before returning to Bologna in Italy, where he’s been for the 2022/23 season, which has been hindered by periodic injury difficulties.
According to Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenberg, Eintracht Frankfurt is still following Zirkzee’s position, however nothing is in the advanced stages at this time. They would prefer to bring in other players while also attempting to bargain with Bayern’s asking price for a compensation cost to have Dino Toppmöller replace Oliver Glasner as manager. Frankfurt have previously indicated that they will split ways with Glasner at the conclusion of the season, but they are hesitant to fulfill Bayern’s 500,000 euro asking price for the compensation fee because he is legally still under contract with Bayern, as is Julian Nagelsmann.
According to Plettenberg, Frankfurt had Hugo Ekitike from Paris Saint-Germain (on loan from Reims) and Moussa Dembélé from Olympique Lyon higher on their list than Zirkzee. They may be preparing to sell striker Randal Kolo Muani this summer, while they are still focused on other transfer targets and would like a higher class replacement than Zirkzee as a natural striker.
Zirkzee’s best season was without a doubt with Anderlecht in the 2021/22 season, when he amassed 18 goals and 13 assists in 47 games across all competitions. In the 2020/21 season, it became evident that the Dutchmen’s lofty expectations would not be met, at least not at Bayern, where he was always second fiddle to Robert Lewandowski. When the Polish ace was sidelined with a knee injury during the 2019/20 season, he showed flashes of greatness. If it hadn’t been for the coronavirus epidemic that halted play for over two months, he would have missed a lot more matches for Bayern.
