No. 11 FSU Softball dominates FIU on opening day of the Dugout Club Classic.
The softball team returned home to the Seminole Softball Complex on Thursday for the Dugout Club Classic.
In the first game against FIU, Makenna Reid made her first start of the season. In her first start of the season, she held the Panthers to a one-game lead with a 1-2-3 field.
Julie Vanderkas got the nod from FIU and put the Seminoles in order before Reed stranded two runners and moved back to second. Jasony Beachum singled into the bottom half of the box and advanced to third base on an error and a stolen base. With no outs, Amaya Ross put FSU ahead with a two-run home run, then Vanderkas added another runner to lead off the inning.
In the third, two singles put FIU ahead before Reed responded with two outs. With two runners in scoring position, he tied the score at 2-2 with a line drive.
Looking for an answer in the bottom of the fourth inning, Amaya Ross continued her day with a one-out triple, allowing her to score on a third baseman’s error.
After getting the nod, with two outs Michaela Edenfield committed an error and was replaced by Annie Potter when Holly Baker singled. In the 9th inning, Kaylee Mudge added another run with a double.
Vanderkas, now 4-2, replaced Ella Whitney for the remainder of the match. Janie Carr, playing against the new pitcher, hit a double and added two more runs to the team’s total.
Continuing a two-way rally, Isa Torres singled and scored Carr. The Noles ended the fourth inning with a 7-2 lead against FIU.
After five innings, Reed left the game to allow Mimi Gooden to start in the sixth. Gooden did a solid job in the first inning, but the offense was unable to add any extra runs in the same inning.
Moving into the seventh inning, after Gooden allowed his second of the inning, his first single was scored on an error with one out. Nose’s pitcher limited the damage with a hit and finished the game 7-3.
The Soviet Union, who achieved their first win of the day, started Ashtyn Danley in the second game. Batter Danley and his opponent Brooke McNichols entered the second inning with the score still 0-0.
Ross, who started in the bottom of the second inning, hit a double, stole a base and moved up to third base. But basepath location didn’t matter much, as Eden Field crushed a two-run field goal to take the lead in the second half.
In the fourth inning, tied 2-0, Ross hit a single into the shallow right field and stole a base. Devin Flaherty hit another single against the Panthers that put runners on the corners. The defense made a mistake during the interception attempt, allowing Ross and Flaherty to score and clear the field goal.
Danley found himself in a pinch in the fifth inning when an error allowed the base runner to reach with one out. One joined the other and both continued up the pass. A ground ball added an out, but FIU made it 5-1.
Jasony Beacham singled in the bottom of the frame. After a lift to Annie Potter, Ross hit her second triple of the day, bringing the runner home. Flaherty quickly made a sacrifice hit to make it 7-1.
Allison Royal started in the sixth inning in Danley’s place, and the Panthers took the lead with a single. The runner was placed second behind Royalty and the new infielder took him out. Angeli Bueno got her first career hit in the top of the sixth inning before Christina Hartley committed an error. Per regulation, Kalay Harding hit a double to end the game 9-1.
