What was Georgia football’s offense missing in 2023, and what does it need in 2024?
Georgia football is known nationally for its fearsome defense. It should come as no surprise to Georgia fans that Kirby Smart is known as one of the best defensive backs in college football, with his defense consistently ranking in the top 10 in the nation.
However, changes have recently been made to the Georgian language program. The change in attitude on offense began with the hiring of Todd Monken in 2020. Monken modernized Georgia’s offense, making the Dawgs’ offense more open and risky.
In one of his rare media appearances while in Athens, Monken said he called plays as if he would never be in Athens again. Trainer’s Translation: Take risks and leave no stone unturned.
That’s exactly what Monken did. You can go back to the fourth quarter of the 2022 National Championship vs. Alabama and see it in all its glory. Another manifestation of Monken’s motto occurred during Georgia’s final two offensive tackles in the 2022 Chick-fil-A Bowl vs. Ohio State.
Monken left the Georgia football program and joined the NFL, where he coached two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson. However, the Dawgs had a good relationship with Mike Bobo. Bobo previously played and coached for Georgia, as well as being named to the team’s 2022 roster. I’m not going to write everything about last season, but the offense was slow to ramp up, especially new starter Carson Beck.
But during the fourth quarter against Auburn, when the Dawgs fell behind, Beck and the Georgia offense came alive. Now, when we look at the 2023 season, something is missing. It wasn’t like 2021 or 2022. The offense put up similar numbers and scored almost the same points as in 2022. But throughout the year, something was missing.
I couldn’t figure it out. Even though this is pretty much the last copy, if you read the postgame analysis blogs I’ve written, you’ll find some people are having a hard time understanding what’s different this year. 2 years.
If you still don’t understand what I mean, there’s only one way to describe his year. The 2023 Dawgs offense looked like a fake baseball jersey from an online wholesale store. The material, color and sewing are the same.
However, the player or team name is incorrect due to incorrect font or spelling. Everything seems fine, but something is wrong. I went to see all the 2023 games at the beginning of February, and just finished watching the Orange Bowl the other day.
Now I’m back with what I was missing. Too often Bobo seemed to be being conservative with his jokes when it mattered most. Was this done to protect Carson Beck early in the season? This may happen. However, it was a close game in the SEC Championship Game against Alabama.
Some of you reading this may be hesitant or even argue against the screen. If you’re one of those people, go back and take a look. Watch as the Dawgs run draws or screens on his 3 and his 8 in the red zone on multiple plays. So let’s take a look back at the 2022 season and tell us where you saw it.
Georgia’s offense will be further improved with the addition of Trevor Etienne. Etienne is probably the Dawgs’ most complete cornerback since D’Andre Swift. Additionally, we’ve heard from a number of prominent figures that the wide receiver core isn’t as good as it was last season. They may be right, but the expansion would be just as good, if not better. But that’s just a guess.
Therefore, the Dawgs’ offense could prove to be better than the 2023 version. So why write a blog that criticizes theater directors? For the Dawgs to win his third national championship in his four years, Mike Bobo will have to create an atmosphere that will never exist again.
