After getting out to a 21-0 first-quarter lead against the New Orleans Saints in Week 13, it looked like the Detroit Lions were on their way to a massive blowout victory. However, that quickly changed in the third quarter when the Saints cut the deficit to three.
At the end of the day, the Lions won thanks in large part to newly acquired linebacker Bruce Irvin and the rest of their talented pass rushers. After the game, Irvin credited the team’s ability to get pressure on Saints quarterback Derek Carr on Sunday as a key to victory.
Irvin made his Lions debut against the Saints in Week 13, playing only 11 snaps as he gets up to speed both physically and mentally. However, he made his presence felt in the limited playing time, laying a hard hit on Carr that ultimately forced him out of the game.
Per Pro Football Talk, Irvin cites his experience playing as Carr’s teammate dating back to their days as members of the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders. “I played with him [Carr] in Oakland, so I know when you get around him, he gets rattled,” said Irvin. “He’s a hell of a player, but we knew if we got around him, we could rattle him a little,” Irvin added.
Carr suffered a concussion as well as injuries to his shoulder and back as a result of the hit by Irvin, putting his status for Week 14 in doubt.
