Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison has been wowed by a player Everton sold for £22.5million five years ago.
It’s fair to say Goodison Park has become notorious with underperforming big-name players in recent years – Dele Alli and James Rodriguez are two examples.
For whatever reason, Everton have failed to get the best out of players who were once tipped to reach the very top of the game.
Yet, this week, a player the Toffees sold for £22.5million in 2019 has caught the eye on the biggest stage.
James Maddison wowed by Ademola Lookman’s Europa League final performance
Everton captured the signing of Ademola Lookman for £11million back in 2017. The former Charlton Athletic youngster was tipped for big things at Goodison Park.
But four goals in 48 appearances represented a disappointing return for the now-26-year-old.
After a successful loan spell at RB Leipzig, Lookman was allowed to depart two years after his arrival, with the Toffees doubling their money.
Since his Merseyside departure, the Nigerian has gone from strength to strength and netted a hat trick during the 2024 Europa League final for his current club, Atalanta, a performance which left Maddison stunned.
