Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison is becoming one of his favourite players in the Premier League.
Writing in his column on The Telegraph, Carragher could not help but rave about the former Leicester City star and likened the 26-year-old to two Spurs legends.
“James Maddison is rapidly becoming one of my favourite Premier League footballers; he plays and speaks like he is from a bygone era.
“Maddison looks like the prototype Spurs player, following in the traditions of Paul Gascoigne and Glenn Hoddle – an individual who puts a smile on supporters’ faces.”
That is high praise indeed for Maddison from Carragher, and rightfully so, considering the England international’s start to life at the Lilywhites.
Gascoigne and Hoddle, who spent several years at Tottenham, were considered the most creative and exciting talents of their generations, mesmerising crowds with their performances.
Maddison seems to have brought that sense of anticipation back to the North London side, who have missed a spark in the middle of the park since Christian Eriksen’s departure in January 2020.
Tottenham signed Maddison this summer from Leicester City for £40 million, and looking back on it, it seems like the Lilywhites got themselves a bargain.
Spurs sold Harry Kane to Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window and there was concern around the North London club for the 2023/24 campaign without the influence and contribution of their record goalscorer.
Ange Postecoglou had a big task on his hands, but the Australian manager has showcased his tactical nous, bringing the best out of Tottenham’s attack, who have been playing free-flowing football.
Maddison and Son Heung-min have been the main protagonists for Spurs’ success so far and the former Leicester star looks to have formed a great partnership and understanding with the South Korea international.
