The Boston Celtics have made NBA history by signing Jaylen Brown to the league’s highest deal.
The forward has agreed to a five-year contract worth $304 million (£235.5 million), breaking Nikola Jokic’s previous record with the Denver Nuggets. This is also the first “supermax” contract handed to a player. Brown will make $52 million (£40.2 million) in his debut season with this rich contract, with his income gradually growing each year.
Brown would earn a stunning $69 million (£53.4 million) at the end of his deal in the 2028/29 season, according to the Express US.Brown’s strong performance the previous season was critical in getting the record-breaking contract.
He averaged 26.6 points and 6.9 rebounds per game, establishing himself as the league’s rising star. Brown had previously signed a four-year deal worth $106.3 million (£82.3 million) in 2019, which was supposed to expire in 2024.
However, the Celtics’ dedication to Brown extends beyond monetary considerations. This agreement shows that they intend to retain Brown and fellow superstar Jayson Tatum together, putting an end to speculations of a separation between the two players.
Brown has been the target of trade rumors over the years, with fans frustrated by the team’s inability to win a title despite having great squads. There was even talk of trading Brown for guys like Kevin Durant and Luka Doncic.
Brown has already hinted about leaving Boston, and he addressed his future at the close of the season. “I expected to win tonight and move on,” he added.
“That was my focus, and that is what I have been focused on.” We failed, I failed, and it’s difficult to think about anything else right now. We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.”
But he has now become the highest-paid player in NBA history with the Celtics, surpassing Jokic’s previous record.
