We’ve officially reached the week of the NFL Draft, and rumors are flying around now more than ever.
The Minnesota Vikings are no strangers to such rumors regarding either a trade partner to move up the draft board, their QB preference, or even the eventual extension for wide receiver Justin Jefferson. For Jefferson’s contract rumors, the noise is only getting louder after a cryptic social media post that he made on Sunday.
With the NBA playoffs getting started this weekend, Jefferson made an appearance at Game 1 of the Minnesota Timberwolves’ series against the Phoenix Suns. The next day, he made an Instagram post of a few photos that appear to have been snapped of him throughout the evening, and he wrote the caption, “The money speakin for itself, I call it a fortune-tell.”
Jefferson is entering the fifth season of his NFL career, and of course, this is set to be the final year of his rookie contract with the Vikings. As a result, the terms of Jefferson’s next contract has long been a talking point in Minnesota.
If the two sides are unable to reach a new contract, Jefferson is on track to either hit free agency or have the franchise tag applied to him next offseason.
Because Jefferson hasn’t signed a new contract yet, there have been some who have speculated that the wide receiver could be a part of the Vikings’ trade package to move up the draft board.
A few weeks back, Jefferson made headlines when he suggested that he was “jealous” of the Cincinnati Bengals because they were able to reunite QB Joe Burrow and WR Ja’Marr Chase. Of course, both players were teammates of Jefferson’s during LSU’s run to a national title back in 2019.
During Jefferson’s final collegiate season of 2019, the Tigers averaged a ridiculous 48.4 points per game, and they beat their opponents, on average, by around 27 points per game. LSU went 15-0 that season and cruised to a national championship over Trevor Lawrence’s Clemson Tigers, winning that title game by a score of 42-25.
Jefferson made it very clear that he wanted to “break the bank” with his next contract. It is a well-earned expectation considering how dominant he has been over his first four NFL seasons. Perhaps his social media activity could be hinting that a deal is close to being done.
For now, we still await the moment that Jefferson’s contract extension with the Vikings is officially announced.
