Cleveland Browns star quarterback Deshaun Watson has missed each of the past two games due to a rotator cuff injury in his throwing arm.
There had been mixed reports on Watson’s status for Week 7 against the Indianapolis Colts. One report indicated that the Browns expect Watson to suit up. Another report suggested that he could miss several more weeks of action.
Watson himself provided an update in talking to reporters on Wednesday. “Can’t put a timeline on it,” Watson said. The high-priced signal caller also noted that an MRI revealed a microtear in his rotator cuff muscle.
“We just gotta continue to take it day-to-day. I’m not gonna put the team in jeopardy if I can’t do certain things that is gonna allow us to be handicapped in certain situations. That’s the reason why I haven’t been able to step on the fie
Watson has not suited up since Sept. 24 against the Tennessee Titans. Rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson got the start the following week, throwing three interceptions in a loss to the Baltimore Ravens. P.J. Walker got the call last week coming out of Cleveland’s bye and led the team to a surprise win over the previously undefeated San Francisco 49ers.
“It’s a tricky deal,” Watson told reporters. “You gotta kind of take that baseball approach and talk to some people that deals with rotator cuffs more often. So that’s what we’ve been doing and just really trying to strengthen that muscle and everything around it so we can get back comfortable.”
Cleveland sits at 3-2 on the season and is firmly in the AFC Playoff race. Sure, it would love to get Watson on the field sooner rather than later.
Then again, there are other factors here. Watson is playing under a fully-guaranteed five-year, $230 million contract. The Browns won’t want to risk long-term injury given that type of investment.
