The Reds were forced to cut their cloth accordingly in January and only ended up signing three players during the window.
One priority was a goalkeeper. Matt Turner and Odysseas Vlachodimos had failed to make their mark and Nuno Espirito Santo wasn’t impressed.
So, the head coach went out and paid £5 million to sign Matz Sels from Strasbourg and he’s now the number one custodian.
There was another player that Forest were keen to sign though and he’s now made a big decision on his future with his current club.
Nottingham Forest linked Alvaro Valles ready to quit
The Reds left no stone unturned in their quest to sign a new goalkeeper during the January transfer window.
Crystal Palace stopper Sam Johnstone was heavily linked with Forest but a deal couldn’t be struck for the England international.
Another player who was the subject of a bid was Las Palmas stopper Alvaro Valles and now he could be ready to quit the La Liga outfit.
According to Estadio Deportivo, the 26-year-old has now made a decision to walk away from the club and has no intention of penning a new deal.
The player has a year to run on his contract in the summer and it’s claimed that the club will only accept an offer that they deem of value to them.
Valles was the subject of an £18 million bid from Forest in January but the Las Palmas owner didn’t deem that an acceptable offer.
Now, it remains to be seen whether Forest will return for the Spaniard during the summer transfer window.
Forest need a big name goalkeeper this summer
Nothing against Valles but it’s hard to see that he’s worth more than the sum that Forest have already bid for him.
This season he has kept eight clean sheets in 30 appearances but he would arrive in England with no experience on these shores.
Forest had two exceptional goalkeepers last season in Dean Henderson and Keylor Navas – with both contributing during the campaign.
This season the drop-off in standard has been alarming and although Sels has done alright, the club will surely seek better.
Caoimhin Kelleher has been linked with Forest and that sort of profile will likely appease the Reds fan base more than someone like Valles.
Forest can’t afford to miss the target when they next go shopping for a goalkeeper and it will be a priority for the summer transfer window at the City Ground.
