American ice hockey player Adam Johnson was planning to propose to his girlfriend before his death, which occured during a match between the Nottingham Panthers and Sheffield Steelers
According to family friends, Adam Johnson’s girlfriend discovered the engagement ring he was planned to give her shortly after his sad death.
On October 28, the 29-year-old ice hockey player died after being hit in the neck by a skate while playing for the Nottingham Panthers versus the Sheffield Steelers. Later, it was revealed that he was planned to propose to his girlfriend, Ryan, and had already purchased the ring in preparation for the big day.
Ryan, 24, discovered the ring in the apartment she shared with Adam a few days after his death, which was heartbreaking. According to a family acquaintance who spoke to USA Today, Johnson’s loved ones were aware that he planned to propose at some point.
“His grandmother told me that [Johnson] had shown her the ring before he left and he was going to propose at some point … I’m sure [Ryan[ had an inkling,” revealed Scott Pionk, whose son played college hockey with Johnson. The American outlet also reported that a second friend of family, who wanted to remain anonymous, confirmed Pionk’s account.
Johnson’s aunt Kari said: “We were all really excited because we were really looking forward to their future and he didn’t get a chance to ask her [to marry him], and then this happened.” Adam and Ryan had been dating for over a year and it’s claimed he bought the ring before they moved to England for his ice hockey career in August.
