Last season, the Boston Celtics failed to use Payton Pritchard, and it cost them. Pritchard had requested a trade before midseason, and his dissatisfaction carried over into the playoffs, where he did not see any action. Fast forward to this offseason, and Pritchard is doing admirably for Team USA Select.
Pritchard’s good performance for the Select team is intriguing, and the Cs should pay attention. It also raises the question of what the franchise intends to do with Pritchard.
The Celtics must learn from their error of only playing Pritchard 13 minutes a game last season. It’s odd that Pritchard didn’t participate last season after his outstanding first two seasons and solid postseason on route to the NBA Finals. Pritchard is a quality backup point guard in the NBA and should be a part of the C’s rotation.
Pritchard’s recent performance with the Select team demonstrates his ability to compete with the greatest players. Reporters following Team USA’s scrimmage noted Pritchard’s effective playmaking and scoring as a backup to Cade Cunningham. Pritchard could use his recent performance to build his confidence heading into next season.
