Leeds United are planning to offer Crysencio Summerville a new long-term contract to fend off interest from top clubs, according to HITC.
Writing on their website (5 April), the news outlet report that several top clubs across the Premier League and Europe are interested in signing the Dutch winger including Atletico Madrid.
But the Whites, who currently sit in the automatic promotion places in the Championship, plan to offer him a long-term deal to extend his contract at Elland Road beyond 2026 if they get back to the top flight.
“Leeds currently have Summerville under contract at Elland Road until June 2026, having last extended his terms in August 2022,” they wrote.
“But HITC also understands that the Whites plan to open talks about a new deal if and when the club secures promotion back to the Premier League.”
Leeds United must keep their top stars
If the Whites don’t earn promotion back to the Premier League, then it could be a while before they get back to the top-flight because of how strong their squad is.
Players like Summerville, Georginio Rutter, Wilfried Gnonto, Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu have all shown that they are too good for this level and deserve to be playing at the top.
If Leeds can’t provide that next season, then the players won’t be short of suitors looking to take them away from Elland Road and put them on a pedestal elsewhere.
But even with promotion it would be very difficult for the club to fend off offers for every one of the top players at the club as financially they are flying close to the wind with FFP rules.
Giving Summerville a new deal to reflect his status as a key player at a Premier League club would only be a good thing, and hopefully it will be enough to keep him around for a little while longer yet.
