Portsmouth have been named among the admirers of Peterborough United standout Harrison Burrows coming into the summer window.
Portsmouth will be determined to strengthen across the board as they prepare to return to Championship football and a move for Burrows would certainly see them do that
The 22-year-old has a year left on his Peterborough United deal after notching 12 goals and 18 assists in 58 games from left-back over the course of the 2023/24 campaign.
However, after such a strong campaign and with other high profile interest, The News has said Pompey are worried they will be priced out of the chase.
With that in mind, here are three Burrows alternatives Portsmouth should keep in mind…
Georgie Gent – Blackburn Rovers
Gent will be back with Blackburn Rovers fresh after a brilliant loan at Motherwell and if he’s not going to get an opportunity at Ewood Park, another move away could be beneficial.
Sending him to a Championship rival might not be in Rovers’ plans but on a permanent or temporary basis, Gent could be a great alternative to Burrows.
The 20-year-old has spent this season bombing up and down the left for Motherwell, notching three goals and six assists along the way. Portsmouth could be a great place for him to kick on and with a year left on his deal, he might not break the bank.
Derry Murkin – FC Schalke
Perhaps a slightly optimistic shout given that Murkin only moved to the German giants last summer, but after they failed to win promotion once again, an opportunity back in his native could be intriguing for the Englishman.
Colchester-born Murkin spent his entire career in the Netherlands before joining Schalke and notched a healthy nine goals and 23 assists in 97 games for FC Volendam. That combined with a goal and six assists in 23 2. Bundesliga games shows he can match Burrows’ output.
24-year-old Murkin would be another fantastic option to consider but while he’d likely cost less than Burrows, he might still be a little pricey.
Sam McCallum – Norwich City
In the hunt for a real bargain, free agent to-be McCallum should be in the Pompey thinking.
He’ll be moving on from Norwich City when his deal expires and will not be short of suitors, so Portsmouth would have to move fairly swiftly to get this one done if they saw him as a good signing.
The 23-year-old has a great amount of Championship experience to his name but still has plenty of time to develop further. On a free transfer, he might be an ideal target for John Mousinho and co.
