Liverpool are battling Arsenal and Manchester City in the Premier League title race and have already answered a crucial question that Gunners legend Thierry Henry knows his former club hasn’t answered yet
Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has an obvious concern for his former club as they prepare for a Premier League title battle with Liverpool and Manchester City.
The Gunners continued their attack at the top of the table with a 6-0 win over Sheffield United on Monday evening. They dominated throughout to move back to within two points at the top of the table from Liverpool.
Just two points separate the top three teams in the table, with Liverpool and Manchester City meeting in a big match at Anfield on Sunday (10 March). But while Manchester City and Liverpool have been here before, Arsenal are in uncharted territory. While they were competing for the title last season, they were out of Europe on March 16 after being knocked out of the Europa League. This time they are juggling the Champions League and trying to go beyond the round of 16.
As a result, Henry has raised doubts about whether his former club is ready to meet the demands. However, he knows that these questions have already been answered by Liverpool and Manchester City, given their experiences in these scenarios.
Speaking on Sky Sports Monday Night Football ahead of Arsenal’s win over Sheffield United, Henry was asked about the remaining fixtures. He highlighted the home match against Chelsea, just days after the Champions League second leg against Porto, as a potentially complicated match.
He said: “Looking at the situation, it will be tough because Chelsea play so well against teams who have the ball, especially when they are away from home.
“Having said that, and looking at the situation this way, how Manchester City are doing, who knows? Brighton away, Wolverhampton, I won’t name that team (Tottenham), we all know they will make sure we don’t win and that the away of United will be difficult.
“If we add to that, if we go deep into the Champions League, we have to add those games too. Can you handle this? I know that Manchester City and Liverpool are equipped to deal with this situation.
“So when I look at this, it will be a difficult task when I’m not at home and I’m scared. Why? Because I know it was in the Champions League, but Porto, between all our goals and playing well, prevented us from scoring away. “A well-trained and well-positioned team. These teams could see it now and go for it, give them the ball, let’s stay compact and speed, speed, speed, they have speed on the counterattack.
Unlike Arsenal and Manchester City, Liverpool do not view the Champions League as a potential distraction. Instead, they find themselves in the Europa League round of 16, and Jurgen Klopp is expected to make major changes to his squad to face Sparta Prague either side of the big Premier League match against City at Anfield.
Liverpool.com says: Arsenal look like real title contenders, but everyone knows teams can collapse at the end of the season. They have worked hard to return to the Champions League and Mikel Arteta will need to carefully balance his resources to maintain their momentum in Europe and the Premier League. Manchester City have plenty of depth in their squad and have proven they are capable of competing in both competitions by winning the treble last year. Liverpool have been there and done that too, although the fact they play in the Europa League and not the Champions League means the Premier League will undoubtedly be the top priority.
