News emerges regarding future of Barnsley man after loan exit

Barnsley’s Callum Styles’ future at loan club Sunderland may depend on who they appoint as their new manager, the Sunderland Echo has suggested.

Barnsley gave the Hungary international the green light to join Sunderland on a temporary basis in the last January transfer window, with the Black Cats holding an option to buy him permanently this summer. However, it remains to be seen whether they will be snapping him up or letting him return to Oakwell.

Styles, 24, is still under contract at Oakwell until June 2025 meaning he has over 12 months left on his deal in South Yorkshire. He has been on the books of the Tykes since joining them as a youngster back in 2018.

In this latest update regarding his current situation at the Stadium of Light, the Sunderland Echo report there is still a ‘fair amount’ of time for Sunderland to exercise their clause to purchase him. The report adds that their new manager could have some ‘input’ on the decision.

Update regarding Barnsley man at Sunderland

Sunderland landed Styles this past winter to add more competition and depth to their ranks.

However, his time in the North East didn’t really go to plan and their form fell off a cliff following his arrival.

He went on to play 12 times in all competitions and watched on as Michael Beale was sacked and replaced by Mike Dodds on an interim basis.

The Black Cats are still in the hunt for a permanent replacement for Beale and have a big decision to mak as they weigh up their options. Whoever they bring in will have the chance to buy Styles if they want.

He rose up through the academy ranks at Bury and went on to feature for their first-team on 47 occasions before his switch to Barnsley.

Styles has since played 151 matches for the Tykes altogether to date and has scored 13 goals. He helped them win promotion from the third tier in his first year there.

He was also loaned out to Millwall in the 2022/23 campaign and featured on 22 occasions for the Lions before heading back up north.

What next?

If Sunderland don’t choose to bring him in ahead of next term, Styles would head back to Barnsley.

The Tykes also don’t have a head coach right now and are also searching for one.

Styles’ future is up in the air right now and is out of his control.
