Wrexham have allowed a number of experienced players to leave the club this summer as Phil Parkinson prepares for League One life.
Phil Parkinson has masterminded two successive promotions to take Wrexham from the National League to League One in rapid fashion.
That is hugely exciting for everybody connected to Wrexham after years of being stuck in non-league football and praise will rightfully go to Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.
The entire dynamic around Wrexham has changed in recent years and fans can now look forward to a first League One campaign since the 2004-05 season.
Not everybody can stay for the full journey though and Wrexham have said goodbye to the likes of Ben Tozer and Luke Young this summer.
Both players have been great characters in this Wrexham squad and Parkinson will be relying on the experience of other players a little more after their exits.
Ollie Palmer on his Wrexham future
Wrexham have seasoned pros throughout Parkinson’s squad with Ollie Palmer one of them.
The giant striker has been a vital presence at Wrexham ever since his January 2022 move from AFC Wimbledon.
Palmer has only ever played 18 months of League One football in his career and he will be desperate to shine after Wrexham’s promotion.
The 32-year-old has now spoken on the Elvis Duran Show over in the United States and has comments on his Wrexham future.
Palmer admitted that he wants to finish his career with Wrexham – but there is an ‘honest reality’ about that wish.
Palmer acknowledges that Wrexham are growing rapidly and with the goal of becoming a Premier League club, he may well be moved out of the door.
The striker simply wants to play for Wrexham for as long as possible, but would be open to moving to Major League Soccer if he was to leave the STōK Cae Ras any time soon.
“I’ll speak the truth, I’ll speak complete facts because that’s how I always answer questions,” said Palmer. “I’d love to play for Wrexham until the end of my career – that would be my ultimate goal but the honest reality is that it’s growing at such a fast pace and the aim is to get into the Premier League and there’s no time to be sentimental, right?”
“My aim is to be there as long as possible and to deliver the club success, and I’ll do that for as long as I’m wanted to and failing that, because everything does come to an end, I’d love to play in America,” he added.
Palmer still has a big role to play
Palmer is realistic about his future but we can’t see him being moved out of Wrexham any time soon.
Wrexham have added other strikers since promotion from the National League with Steven Fletcher and Jack Marriott arriving.
Both Fletcher and Marriott are quality strikers but it was Palmer who partnered Paul Mullin in the promotion run-in.
That partnership up top has been outstanding for a while now and we could certainly imagine seeing them both up top to start the League One campaign.
Palmer is under contract until the summer of 2025, meaning this could be his last season at Wrexham.
The target man is a popular figure though and if he can continue to make an impact in League One, he may well earn a new deal to extend his stay at the club.
