Phil Parkinson confused as Wrexham boss comments on Stevenage pitch inspection

Wrexham have suffered just a second defeat of the League One season with a 1-0 loss at Stevenage after torrential downpour.

Playing Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday is the hallmark test of life in the EFL and Wrexham have faced that this week.

Wrexham headed away to Leyton Orient over the weekend and claimed a battling 0-0 draw when not on absolute top form.

Tuesday presented another difficult test as Wrexham made a second long trip in a matter of days, this time taking on Stevenage away from home.

Wrexham were off-colour again and fell to a 1-0 defeat at Louis Thompson fired home the only goal of the game.

Wrexham dominated possession but just didn’t have the key to unlock a stubborn Stevenage defence on the night.

Alex Revell on Stevenage v Wrexham pitch inspection

This game almost didn’t even go ahead – and some Wrexham fans may wish that it hadn’t.

Heavy rainfall in Stevenage on Tuesday afternoon left the game in danger of being postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

A late pitch inspection took place and the officials decided to let the game go ahead after all.

Stevenage boss Alex Revell has now shared just how close the game was to being postponed.

Speaking on Stevenage’s official YouTube channel, Revell suggested that the status of the game was actually ‘touch and go’ leading up to kick off.

Revell thanked the staff who helped ensure that the game took place as Stevenage claimed a second home win in just a matter of days.

“We’re thankful for all the staff who got the game on, because it was touch and go,” said Revell.

“They deserve huge credit,” he added.

Phil Parkinson left baffled

Revell seemingly feels that the game was close to being scrapped but Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson was left confused.

Speaking to The Athletic, Parkinson admitted that he couldn’t understand all the fuss about the pitch once he arrived at the Lamex Stadium.

Parkinson felt that the pitch was in ‘absolutely perfect’ condition and didn’t appear to have taken any major damage from the rain.

“Once I got here, I did wonder what all the fuss had been about,” said Parkinson. “The pitch was absolutely perfect,” he added.

Wrexham will at least be pleased to have avoided making multiple trips to Stevenage given the near-350-mile-round trip.

The performance on the night just wasn’t good enough but Parkinson certainly isn’t using the pitch as any sort of excuse for Wrexham’s defeat
