Just when you thought the Philadelphia Phillies might have finished adding talent, news comes from MLB insider Bob Nightengale.
Nightengale said in a column for Sunday’s USA Today that the Phillies could potentially deal with a Cy Young pitcher, but there’s a catch. Two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell remains unsigned.
That’s been a common theme among Scott Boras’ clients this winter, two of whom have already signed short-term deals in Cody Bellinger and Matt Chapman. Snell might be next.
Nightengale said Philadelphia is interested in Snell, but only on a short-term deal. Like other compatriots from Boras. But it can be a win-win for both parties. Snell will receive a hefty paycheck on a short-term deal, which will likely include waivers, allowing him to test the market again as early as next winter.
For the Phillies, this would start an already electric rotation and give them an elite arm to bridge the gap until top prospect Andrew Painter is healthy and ready to enter the big league rotation. As mentioned above, Boras could be open to making a similar trade now that MLB spring training has begun and the market is stagnant.
This may not be the kind of win Boras is used to getting for his clients, but it could be the best option on the table. As for Philadelphia, we can’t rule out the possibility of President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski making renewed efforts to improve the team.
