Nazzan Zanetello had a prior connection to one of Boston’s biggest star athletes, Jayson Tatum, before being picked by the Red Sox on Sunday night.
Zanetello, whom the Red Sox selected with the 50th overall pick on Sunday night, was a multi-sport athlete at Christian Brothers High School in St. Louis, where he played baseball and basketball. Justin Tatum, the father of Boston’s four-time All-Star forward, is his basketball coach.
“Justin was my basketball coach,” Zanetello said to The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier. “He texted me this morning, saying, ‘I’ll hook you up with Jayson.'” He’ll look after you.’ That was disgusting.”
Tatum’s arrival in Boston was comparable to Zanetello’s.
Tatum, a St. Louis native like Zanetello, was 19 years old during his rookie season in Boston after being drafted third overall by the Celtics in 2017.
However, the 18-year-old shortstop prospect — one of four taken by Boston in the draft — isn’t simply excited about having a link to one of the NBA’s brightest talents. In fact, Zanetello stated the name of his first Little League team was the Red Sox, adding to the odd sense of getting picked by Boston.
“I’ve been floating for the entire time.” “I got to put on this jersey and hat again this morning and I was like, ‘I get to do it again,'” Zanetello told Speier. “I didn’t take it off last night.” My mother urged me to take it off before going to supper so that I wouldn’t get anything on it. I didn’t want to remove it. It’s like a fantasy come true. I can’t really put it into words how excited I am to finally be able to pursue my lifetime dream of becoming a professional baseball player and begin the first step.”
