Boston Celtics Twitter has been circulating an August 9 Draft Digest projection of Bronny James with the No. 24 pick in the 2024 NBA draft in recent days, connecting the son of LeBron James and one of the greatest franchise rivals in the career of the “king.” Of course, if the son of LeBron lands with the Cs, there’s a strong possibility that Sr. would do so as well; at least according to an interview with The Athletic’s Jason Lloyd (subscription required) in which LBJ said he’d play his final season with Bronny.
Inside The Celtics’ Eric Jay Santos believes that the Celtics-Bronny rumor “paves the way” for the unthinkable during the 2024-25 season, or whenever the “king” finally calls it quits in the future.
“On August 9th, Draft Digest’s latest mock draft projected James to be chosen with the 24th pick,” Jay Santos prefaced before saying, “This is in spite of the 18-year-old going into cardiac arrest at a University of Southern California basketball practice. Drafting Bronny James could pave the way to the Celtics signing his Hall-of-Fame-bound father. James has previously expressed desire to play alongside his son before retiringLeBron James would be the perfect playmaker in a Boston Celtics lineup with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown
Never before have Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown had the opportunity to play with a facilitator like James. Kyrie Irving was dynamic, but James was the only player to bring Irving anywhere close to an NBA Championship.
We don’t yet know Kristaps Porzingis’ fit on the Cs, but what Tatum and Brown could do together is beyond well-documented. The franchise was a quarter from a 3-2 series lead on the Golden State Warriors in the 2022 Finals with the Jays leading the charge, but a leadership void led to the more experienced team praying on a squad in that spotlight for the first time.
James’ 10 trips to the Finals are well-documented, and he is the one Finals MVP to have toppled the dynastic Steve Kerr-coached Warriors. Mix extra motivation from playing with his son and the potential to give fans flashbacks of the Miami Heatles days in transition with Brown, Tatum, and Porzingis, and you a got a hypothetical that’s as tempting as they come.
