The Golden State Warriors are in danger of missing the play-in tournament, and if they end up doing so, it would be an alarming statement about the present state of the once-proud franchise.
Their future could be even more alarming, as their old guard of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green are getting long in the tooth.
However, there are those who are a little more optimistic about the team’s immediate future, and one of those people is head coach Steve Kerr, who said he wants to remain in his role for a couple more years, per NBC Sports.
“I want to be here for the next couple years … We have the makings of something special,” Kerr said.
Kerr became the Warriors’ head coach in 2014 after turning down an offer to be the New York Knicks’ head coach and reunite with Phil Jackson, who had been his coach during his playing career and was then a Knicks executive.
At the time, Golden State was a good team, but not a great one, but Kerr unlocked its potential by turning it into a fast-breaking team and utilizing a halfcourt offensive system that involved lots of player movement off the ball.
The team won 67 regular-season games in it’s first season with Kerr at the helm, a 16-game improvement over the previous season, and it went on to win its first NBA championship since 1975.
Three more world titles would follow in the next seven seasons, but since then, the Warriors have rusted over.
Despite their problems this season, they do have a promising rookie in Brandin Podziemski, while third-year forward Jonathan Kuminga, a former lottery pick, has finally blossomed.
If Kerr and the front office can figure some things out this summer, perhaps next season the Warriors will be very competitive again, at least for a little while.
