While sources this week confirmed the signing of Pau Torres from Villarreal on a five-year contract, the club is expected to make the official announcement next week.
Villa’s messages surrounding the official announcement of Youri Tielemans in the new Villa home shirt were released today. Torres, on the other hand, is now on vacation and so unable to undergo a medical examination, finalize the arrangements, and fulfill his promotional commitments. Torres will fly into the UK next week, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter (see below), who has been closely following the deal.
Unai Emery is anxious to have Torres on board before the start of the preseason and the camp in the United States, where Villa will compete in the Premier League Summer Series.
Torres’ stated transfer fees have been widely disparate. Talksport initially said £55 million, whereas other sites, such as the Guardian, stated £35 million. Several sites have now stated that the actual cost was around £31.5 million plus add-ons.
Torres was linked with a move to Manchester United or Chelsea for roughly £43 million at this time last year, so now that he is in the final year of his contract with Villarreal, a fee of £31.5 million sounds reasonable. The original sum of £55m is understood to be the value of his Villarreal contract’s true release clause.
