Wrexham appears to be eyeing Barnsley star as manager gave strong words about player

The League Two club has been linked with a bid for the 32-year-old, who has been a regular for the Tykes throughout pre-season.

Following the injury to star striker Paul Mullin, who punctured his lung in a collision with young Manchester United goalkeeper Nathan Bishop during their tour in the United States, Wrexham’s hand could be forced in the transfer market, with no current timeframe on his return ahead of the start of the new season.

Eastbourne-born Norwood scored 11 goals in 42 games for South Yorkshire, guiding them to the League One play-off final, when they were defeated by county rivals Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley.

The 5ft 10′′ attacker has one year left on his contract at Oakwell, and the additions of Max Watters and Andy Dallas may limit his playing time, as Collins now has a plethora of firepower at his disposal.

Arriving on a free transfer after his contract at Ipswich Town expired, the former Forest Green and Tranmere midfielder has shown to be a wise addition, and the club might profit quickly if they decide to cash in this summer.

The seasoned attacker was at his best in the fourth division during the 2018/19 season, finishing as the joint-top scorer in English football with 32 goals at Tranmere, propelling the Super White Army to promotion and earning a place in the League Two Team of the Year.

Collins addressed the interest in Norwood after scoring again against Crewe Alexandra on Saturday:

“Good players are sought after by clubs. He’s scored goals throughout preseason and is a good presser. You’re in severe danger if no one wants your players at your club. Many people want our players, but happily, we have control over who gets to go. All we have to do now is add to them.

“You’ve got James, Devante (Cole) scored 15 goals last season, we’ve added Max Watters and Andy Dallas, who are exciting, and Oli Shaw has had a good pre-season.”

Norwood, who has 179 goals in 493 games, would be an ideal addition to Phil Parkinson’s squad. The skilled forward has previously been prolific in League Two and has experience gaining promotion from that level, which will be the Welsh side’s goal this season.

Wrexham might give guaranteed minutes on the pitch for Norwood, even with the return of Mullin, since Parkinson has preferred two forwards in the side during his reign. The move would almost certainly represent a solid pay day for the 32-year-old, with the very real possibility of him and the team returning to League One next season.
