West Ham United may now join the race for the £10 million star.
West Ham United could potentially join the hunt for Sander Berge, according to transfer insider Dean Jones, who spoke to GIVEMESPORT.
Following Declan Rice’s departure, the Hammers will most certainly be looking for midfield reinforcements, and Jones believes West Ham will be in the running for Berge’s signing, along with other Premier League clubs.
With club captain and academy product Rice about to set a British transfer record, attention will soon turn to who the east Londoners would attempt to bring in to replace the England international.
Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse has been mentioned as a possible target, while Fulham’s Joao Palhinha has also been linked with a move to the London Stadium.
However, it has been reported that if the price tags are too high, the Europa Conference League winners may be obliged to look at alternate targets, with Berge emerging as one potential signing.
According to a Football Insider report, the Sheffield United midfielder might be available for as little as £10 million this summer, making him one of the transfer window’s steals.
Berge, who is out of contract at the South Yorkshire club next summer, is said to be unwilling to sign an extension and would like to leave on a free transfer in 2024.
As a result, Sheffield United may be obliged to sell the Norwegian in order to avoid losing a fee for one of their most valuable assets.
And, according to Jones, West Ham will be mentioned in the conversation.
When asked if West Ham would enter the battle for Berge, Jones agreed that the possibilities were high and that he’d be a wise acquisition for the Hammers.
Jones said of the 25-year-old: “I wouldn’t be surprised if Fulham had another look at this, especially at £10 million.” If it was such fantastic value, I wouldn’t be surprised if West Ham got involved in a debate like that.”
Berge, an energetic midfielder capable of carrying the ball forward and sparking a counter-attack, shares some parallels with the departed Rice.
Last season, he was mostly used as a number-eight for Sheffield United, and he was instrumental in the Blades’ promotion win, appearing 43 times across all competitions (Transfermarkt).
Berge was able to rack up an incredible total of 13 G/A contributions in those matches, finding the net seven times and contributing six assists for teammates.
And, at only 25, Berge has many of years ahead of him in the game, with West Ham rightfully considering bringing him to the London Stadium.
