West Ham United close in on signing of Harvey Barnes as replacement for Gianluca Scamacca
According to Calciomercato (2 July), West Ham United are close to signing Harvey Barnes as a replacement for Gianluca Scamacca.
Scamacca is expected to quit the Hammers after only one season, having battled with fitness and form. Currently, a return to Italy with Roma appears to be the most likely destination.
David Moyes would need more goals in his team for the 2023/24 season if he leaves, and with the club advancing on a deal for the Leicester City winger, a fresh report suggests he will be considered as the direct replacement for the Italy international.
“West Ham, Scamacca is no longer needed: a replacement has already been taken,” they wrote.
“West Ham are closing in on Leicester’s Harvey Barnes.” [They have] defeated Newcastle United and Aston Villa.”
David Moyes spent years searching for a new striker to break into the squad and provide the team with the consistency in front of goal that it had needed for a long time.
Scamacca, however, struggled to adjust to England and suffered multiple injuries in his debut season, and it now appears that he may depart the club to return to his hometown.
A replacement would be required, although it appears like the club may aim to replace his numbers with a winger rather than a straight replacement.
Michail Antonio and Danny Ings are still in the team, and if they end up staying through the 2023/24 season, the club will not be short of options and will have added goals to the side.
It may be a wise summer investment, but there have been lots of ties to strikers as well, so don’t count out another number 9 joining Barnes.
