West Ham United now frontrunners to sign €20m Viktor Gyokeres as transfer news emerges

West Ham United have “taken steps” to recruit Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres, and given recent developments in East London, they should be considered frontrunners for his signature.

The “Unplayable” hotshot had a great 2022/23 season, scoring 21 goals in 49 Championship appearances and earning interest from a number of Premier League clubs, including West Ham and Everton.

Gyokeres, on the other hand, is getting interest from Portugal as well, with Sporting naming him a priority transfer target, but the Swede recently claimed that he feels at home in England, providing English suitors plenty of encouragement in their quest.

Sky Sports reported on June 7 [15:16] that Coventry City want more than £17 million (€20 million) for his services this summer, with Claret & Hugh reporting on June 14 that David Moyes sees Gyokeres as the “natural” successor to Antonio at the London Stadium, with the Swede aware of West Ham United’s interest.

According to a recent development, the Hammers are thought to have made a bid in the previous 24 hours to sign the Swedish striker, who is valued at £20 million (Record, pg 6, 19 June).

West Ham United will have a tough battle to get Gyokeres, with Sporting and Everton both vying for his services this summer.

However, given recent developments, the Hammers should be considered the favorites to sign him.

West Ham United can provide some certainties to the attacker; he’d be a natural heir to Antonio at the London Stadium, which means he’d be guaranteed game-time under Moyes’ supervision, especially with Gianluca Scamacca poised to go, and January signing Danny Ings also faces an uncertain future.

The Hammers will not, without a doubt, spend £20 million on a benchwarmer. Furthermore, if Gyokeres joins West Ham United, he will be playing Europa League football next season for a club that recently won the Europa Conference League trophy.
