Wrexham managed to bring in one last summer signing on transfer deadline day as three attackers departed the STōK Cae Ras.
Phil Parkinson had already signed seven players over the summer window before heading into deadline, but the Wrexham boss had one more in him.
Striker Modou Faal arrived from West Bromwich Albion with the giant forward leaving Parkinson delighted upon his arrival.
Faal bolsters Wrexham’s attacking options in the long term and it may take some time for him to really make an impact.
In the short term, Wrexham simply had too many forwards on the books and had to let some go.
Jake Bickerstaff joined Altrincham on loan and Sam Dalby headed up to Scotland with Dundee United to finish the window.
Halifax Town boss on Billy Waters clearance
Sandwiched between those two deals was the departure of Billy Waters.
We would forgive Wrexham fans for even forgetting that Waters was still on the books
Signed from Barrow in March 2023, Waters has only managed four league appearances for Wrexham.
The 29-year-old forward was a regular goalscorer at Halifax Town and Barrow but his move to Wrexham just hasn’t worked out.
After returning from a pretty quiet loan spell at Doncaster Rovers, Waters just had no future at Wrexham.
Waters has now completed a loan return to Halifax Town as he looks to get his career back on in the National League.
Waters may be eyeing a debut against Hartlepool United this weekend but Halifax are left waiting.
Speaking to the Halifax Courier on Thursday, Halifax boss Chris Millington noted that Waters doesn’t actually have clearance to play yet.
Waters needs international clearance to play having moved from Wales to England and Millington is hoping to get the deal ratified in time for Saturday.
Millington added that Waters is fit to play but potentially not at his sharpest having struggled for first-team action of late.
“I hope so, it’s a fairly straightforward process and I’d think the English and Welsh FA would be able to get this type of thing sorted, especially around a transfer window,” he said.
“There’ll be no shortage of this type of business going on, so it should be fairly easy for them to sort out.
“He’s certainly fit, there’s no two ways about that. Match sharpness is something that may be lacking because it’s no secret he’s not played a whole lot of competitive minutes recently,” he added.
Wrexham thanked over Waters deal
Millington also spoke about Waters following Halifax’s 1-0 win at Ebbsfleet United last weekend.
Speaking to the Halifax Courier, Millington admitted that it looked like Waters returning to Halifax was ‘dead’ as late as Thursday – just a day out from the transfer deadline.
Talks were ongoing throughout last week but Halifax were losing hope of a deal.
In the end, Millington claims it was Wrexham who resurrected the deal and paved the way for Waters to make his move.
Millington thanked Wrexham for helping get the deal done, admitting his delight at a ‘fantastic’ deal.
“Fantastic, yeah. There were conversations going on all week and it looked like it was dead on Thursday,” said Millington.
“We’ve got to send a big thank you to Wrexham for resurrecting it yesterday and making it possible.
“And also Billy because when he knew he was going to be going out, there was only one place he wanted to come. Between Billy and Wrexham’s contribution, we’re absolutely delighted that it’s come together,” he added.
Wrexham seemingly had no plans for Waters and really pushed to make sure he joined Halifax and at least played games away from the STōK Cae Ras.
We think Waters has probably played his final game in a Wrexham shirt, at least from a competitive perspective, but he certainly deserves this chance to get back on track at Halifax
