Wrexham have confirmed on their official club website that Scott Butler will be leaving the club upon the expiry of his contract.
Wrexham are gearing up for League One football after sealing back-to-back promotions.
The Red Dragons hold lofty ambitions of reaching the top of the British game and their spending has matched those desires, but the achievement of consecutive automatic rises is one that deserves plaudits regardless.
Following the confirmation of their promotion from League Two, the club announced their retained list. A number of exits were confirmed as they prepared summer transfer plans but a decision was deferred over defender Scott Butler’s future.
The decision over his fate was delayed until his loan at Marine FC had ended.
Now, upon the conclusion of his non-league stint, it has been announced that Butler will indeed leave Wrexham when his contract expires this summer.
On the move
The decision to let go of defender Butler brings an end to his second stint with the North Welsh outfit.
The Wrexham-born centre-back started out in his hometown club’s youth academy setup before moving to Swansea City in the summer of 2022, only to return to the Red Dragons on a free transfer three years later.
He’s never made a first-team appearance for the club but has gained valuable experience out on loan with Nantwich Town and most recently, Marine.
In a bid to kick on after his non-league loans, Butler will head for free agency as he looks to land a new club after the end of his time with Wrexham.
A big summer awaits
This summer is sure to be a vital one for Wrexham as they gear up for League One football.
They managed the step up from the National League to League Two with aplomb but the next rise is a big one. They’ll be facing some sizeable clubs with big budgets and top players, so this will certainly be a sterner challenge for Phil Parkinson and co.
Wrexham already have a selection of players who are capable of playing at this level that will set them up well, but more additions are needed if they’re to continue on this upward trajectory.
As this continues, talents such as Butler will be heading for pastures new.
