James McClean raves about Wrexham teammate Ryan Barnett after beating Northampton Town

Wrexham beat Northampton Town 4-1 on Saturday afternoon with Ryan Barnett turning in a stunning display at the STōK Cae Ras.

After picking up just one point from two away games at Leyton Orient and Stevenage, Wrexham were looking forward to getting back to home comforts.

Wrexham welcomed Northampton Town to the STōK Cae Ras but sent them packing with a thumping 4-1 victory.

James McClean opened the scoring before Cameron McGeehan brought the visitors level.

Wrexham stepped it up from there though as Jack Marriott and Elliot Lee established a 3-1 lead.

McClean finished off the scoring just as he started it, converting a Ryan Barnett cross to secure a 4-1 victory.

James McClean praises Wrexham teammate

McClean bagged a brace but the real star of the show was the wing back on the other side.

The aforementioned Barnett enjoyed a simply remarkable day from right wing back.

All four Wrexham goals came from Barnett crosses into the box as he ran riot against Northampton.

Three of them were directly turned in for Barnett assists whilst the other found McClean to tee up Marriott’s goal.

Barnett has been praised by George Dobson for his performance and fans have been blown away by his display.

McClean has now joined in the praise, claiming that Barnett has been ‘absolutely brilliant’ for Wrexham.

Speaking on Wrexham’s official YouTube channel, McClean noted that he would back Barnett to beat any full back and then get real quality into the box.

McClean added that he and Barnett are always planning to set each other up, so it was great to actually celebrate that link-up on Saturday.

“Credit to him today, not just today but since I’ve come here, he’s been absolutely brilliant,” said McClean.

“One v one, I’d back him to beat his full back and for me then, it’s just about getting in the box because nine times out of 10, his delivery is very good as well.

“We say to each other each game that we’ll set each other up. It hasn’t always happened but today it was bang on the money so yeah, it was nice to get a few handshakes,” he added.

Ryan Barnett almost undroppable

Barnett saw Wrexham bring in new competition in his area of the pitch in January.

Wrexham lured Luke Bolton away from Salford City, meaning Barnett had natural competition as a wing back.

That battle now has a runaway leader though as Barnett is almost untouchable in this Wrexham side now.

Bolton has been out injured whilst Sebastian Revan isn’t particularly a threat to take his spot as a natural left-footer.

Barnett is firmly secure as Wrexham’s starting right wing back and nobody will complain about that with some dazzling displays this season.
