Wrexham have been on quite the journey under Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds – and it may get even better yet.
The Hollywood takeover has catapulted Wrexham into a new stratosphere both and off the pitch.
Phil Parkinson has masterminded back-to-back promotions and Wrexham are now impressing in League One too.
Saturday’s 3-0 win over Reading means Wrexham have taken seven points from the first three league games of the season.
Off the pitch, Wrexham have become a phenomenon with fans across the globe growing by the month off the back of the documentary series ‘Welcome to Wrexham’.
The sky is the limit for Wrexham right now and fans may even have another promotion in mind after an encouraging start to the season.
Lee Trundle shares Wrexham prediction
Wrexham going straight up to the Championship would be quite an achievement.
Three promotions in a row is quite the ask but Wrexham already appear to be settling into League One life well.
Ryan Reynolds has already admitted that he wants another promotion as Wrexham chase the lofty goal of promotion to the Premier League.
That would have sounded insane to any Wrexham just five years ago but the club’s rapid progress means this dream is no longer completely unrealistic.
Former Wrexham striker Lee Trundle has now delivered his verdict on the club’s prospects having been asked an intriguing question.
Speaking to The Sportsman, Trundle was asked which Welsh club will win promotion to the Premier League next – Cardiff City, Swansea City or Wrexham.
Cardiff and Swansea have been in the Premier League before and sit in the Championship right now, but Trundle is still backing Wrexham.
The last few years have been tricky for Cardiff and Swansea, leaving Trundle to believe that Wrexham have the best chance of promotion to the Premier League – despite being a league behind.
Trundle accepts that this claim ‘sounds stupid’ but believes that Wrexham are already trying to build a Championship side in League One and will be ready to compete in the second tier soon enough.
“I know Wrexham are in League One now but from a financial point of view, what they’ve done well is each league they’ve been in, they’ve had a team that is good enough to play at the next level,” said Trundle. “So in the National League, they had a League Two team, League Two they had a League One side, and I think this time, with the money that they’ve got and the calibre of player they can bring in, they’ll start trying to build a Championship side this season for next.
“I think if you look at the backing and everything, you would probably look at Wrexham being [the one to go up]. I know it sounds stupid because they’ve only just come into League One, but if you look at Swansea, we’re at a completely different level financially now, we’re relying on a lot of loans, as a lot of football clubs are, that’s modern day football.
“I think if you’re looking at a financial point of view, I’d probably say Wrexham would have more of a chance. I’d say Wrexham then us [Swansea] and Cardiff last,” he added.
Wrexham already have Championship experience
It’s important not to get too carried away; Wrexham are just three games into the League One campaign.
Yes, it’s started well, but League One is a real slog with 43 games still left to play this term.
Wrexham do have Championship experience at Parkinson’s disposal though and those players would no doubt love a return to the second tier.
Will Boyle, Dan Scarr and Andy Cannon all have brief experience in the second tier before dropping down again.
James McClean and Steven Fletcher have featured prominently in the Championship in recent years whilst George Evans and Ollie Rathbone are no strangers to the Championship landscape.
Wrexham will call on that experience this season and will hope to see those players inspire another promotion-winning season.
