NEWS UPDATE: Wrexham working on double swoop as Phil Parkinson confirms transfer situation

Having already secured the services of six new additions in this summer’s window, Hollywood-backed Wrexham are seemingly not yet done in the transfer market

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson has confirmed the club are considering two new signings as they prepare for the upcoming League One season.

The English boss has guided Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s Red Dragons to back-to-back promotions and recently returned from a pre-season tour of the US and Canada – where his side impressively drew with both Bournemouth and Chelsea.

Phil Parkinson has provided an update on the injury situation facing Wrexham currently as they prepare for their tourAfter financial hardships and points deductions, the team is back in the third division for the first time since the 2004/05 season. They have recruited to boot, adding six new faces to their squad.

The Welsh club aren’t done yet, however, and Parkinson has stressed that a couple of things are required before they can compete with the rest of League One.

Wrexham impressively felled Fleetwood 1-0 in their final friendly on Saturday, as they prepare for their league opener at home against Wycombe Wanderers on August 10th.

“The squad is getting there,” Parkinson told The Athletic after the match. “We are getting there. We are working on a couple of other things to add a bit more quality to what we have already got to make sure we can compete at this level.”

One lingering issue on Parkinson’s mind may be the injury to star man Paul Mullins. The marksman missed Wrexham’s pre-season tour after undergoing major spinal surgery and will likely miss at least the beginning of the season.

Hollywood actor and co-owner of Wrexham Football Club, Ryan Reynolds asks Paul Mullin of Wrexham for his shirt during the Vanarama National League fixture between Wrexham and Notts County at The Racecourse Ground on April 10, 2023 in Wrexham, Wales.

His 24 league goals last campaign were crucial to the Red Dragons’ promotion, and Parkinson may work on finding a striker to fill his boots while he’s sidelined.

The club have reportedly been linked with a loan move for promising Tottenham striker Will Lankshear but could face competition from Championship clubs. Sheffield Wednesday prospect Bailey Cadamarteri is also an alleged loan option to deputise for Mullins.

Arsenal goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has already been recruited this summer after an impressive loan spell last season, with Wrexham fighting off interest from Championship clubs. Midfield option George Dobson also arrived from Charlton Athletic.

Okonkwo impressed between the sticks last seasonThe club additionally brought two members of the Plymouth Argyle squad who were named League One champions last season: experienced first-team defender Dan Scarr and squad goalkeeper Callum Burton.

Parkinson revealed he is happy with Wrexham’s business this summer, citing Birmingham City’s big spending as the reason they have been so active in the market.

“There are obvious candidates in terms of who will be strong [in League One] – with the money that certain teams have spent,” he added. “Like Birmingham, who’ve almost had the [spending] power of a lower Premier League club, never mind a Championship club.

“It’s a very competitive division. There’s more money because of the new TV deal, so people have been spending. Some of the prices we’ve been quoted for players are astronomical.

“The market has become a bit distorted, maybe because of Birmingham’s spending. But we’re pleased with the lads we’ve brought in, and now it’s a case of, ‘Here we go again.’”
