Wrexham’s unbeaten start to the League One season continued on Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 victory away at Peterborough United.
Phil Parkinson had picked up two home wins in the first three League One games this season, beating Wycombe Wanderers and Reading in style.
A 0-0 draw at Bolton Wanderers was a decent result too but Wrexham fans were looking for a first away win of the season – and it came on Saturday.
Jack Marriott returned to haunt his former club, firing Wrexham into a 1-0 lead against Peterborough United – and leaving Posh boss Darren Ferguson ruing his finishing ability.
Defender Max Cleworth popped up with number two, heading home from a set piece to put Wrexham 2-0 up at the Weston Homes Stadium.
Wrexham saw the game out and claimed a superb win, making it nine points from a possible 12 to start the season.
Darren Ferguson on Peterborough United v Wrexham
Winning at home is one thing; few teams will fancy travelling to the STōK Cae Ras this season.
To go and beat an established League One side in Peterborough is a major sign of Wrexham’s progress and how well Parkinson’s side have settled into League One life.
Wrexham will lose games and nobody is expecting the club to go unbeaten this term.
The signs are encouraging though and Wrexham can certainly be pleased with how Peterborough were nullified on Saturday.
Peterborough had 70% of possession but only managed six shots – and none of them were on target.
Posh boss Darren Ferguson – a Wrexham hero in his playing days – has delivered his verdict on Saturday’s game.
Speaking to the Peterborough Telegraph, Ferguson highlighted that Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo didn’t even make a save.
Ferguson noted that this is ‘not a good stat’, believing that Okonkwo was given a rather easy afternoon.
Ferguson praised Wrexham in a sense, suggesting that Peterborough simply couldn’t break Wrexham down.
“We were in control of today’s game. We had a lot of possession, but didn’t do much with it,” said Ferguson. “Their goalkeeper made no saves which is not a good stat. We kept going, but we didn’t have the quality at the top end of the pitch to break them down. Our play was too slow and we have to find a way of converting those small opportunities that come our way to get the first goal. If we do that they have to come at us and space opens up,” he added.
Wrexham defence looking strong
That is now three clean sheets in a row for Wrexham in League One action, bouncing back in style after conceding six goals against Wycombe Wanderers and Sheffield United.
Wrexham are a tough nut to crack with Parkinson continuing to line up with a back three and wing backs.
Okonkwo is a top goalkeeper whilst Cleworth, Eoghan O’Connell and Thomas O’Connor have developed into a quality back three.
Wrexham are also strong at wing back, so much so that exciting summer signing Sebastian Revan can’t even get into the team just yet.
The same goes for new addition Dan Scarr at centre back; he is a proven League One player with a promotion to the Championship on his record, but he has to wait for his chance.
Parkinson will be delighted with his defensive solidity and Peterborough probably won’t be the last team to be frustrated against Wrexham.
