‘Outstanding’: Phil Parkinson hails Wrexham substitute’s performance against

Wrexham picked up another victory on Saturday afternoon, going away to Peterborough United and coming back with a 2-0 victory.

After two home wins and a point on the road, Wrexham fans were hoping for a first away win of the season on Saturday.

Wrexham made the trip to the Weston Homes Stadium and soaked up plenty of Posh pressure to seal a 2-0 victory.

Jack Marriott’s deflected strike opened the scoring before Max Cleworth headed home number two from a corner.

Posh boss Darren Ferguson – a Wrexham hero in his playing days – has rued his side’s defending and praised the finishing ability of Marriott.

Four games, three wins, one draw; this has been a great start to the League One season for Wrexham.

Phil Parkinson on Wrexham’s Ollie Rathbone

Wrexham deservedly sit second in the League One table and fans may already be dreaming of a third promotion in a row.

That is still a big ask and it’s only four games of a 46-game slog, but this has been a strong start for Wrexham.

Parkinson used his substitutions well on Saturday, making four changes from the 62nd minute to the 84th as Wrexham saw the game out.

One of those to come off the bench was midfielder Ollie Rathbone, who completed a move from Rotherham United in August.

Rathbone has yet to really get going in a Wrexham shirt but played around half an hour after coming on for Andy Cannon.

Parkinson has now praised Rathbone’s impact off the bench whilst speaking to The Athletic.

Parkinson suggested that Rathbone was ‘outstanding’ after coming against Peterborough, highlighting him as a ‘really good’ player who can take his chance when required.

The Wrexham boss added that he is pleased with Wrexham’s summer business – such as the deal for Rathbone – whilst acknowledging that some targets slipped through the net.

“Transfer windows are always difficult,” said Parkinson. “Some you get, some you miss out on. But I’ve been pleased with the people we’ve brought into the building to carry on this Wrexham story. The existing lads who have got the shirts are doing great. But, when the games come thick and fast in the weeks to come, we’ll make changes.

“Look at Ollie Rathbone today. I thought he was outstanding (after coming off the bench). We have got really good players to step in,” he added.

Wrexham depth now looks impressive

Wrexham have so far trusted most of the players who played prominent roles in the promotion from League Two last season.

From Saturday’s starting XI against Peterborough, George Dobson was the only summer signing to start.

The bench was full of new additions though with Rathbone joining Callum Burton, Dan Scarr, Sebastian Revan and latest signing Modou Faal all named as substitutes.

That depth is hugely impressive with centre back Scarr offering League One know-how and wing back Revan already showing electric quality.

Rathbone knows the League One scene and gives great energy from midfield with new addition Faal is a huge target man up top.

Wrexham have added depth throughout the summer and that was the key priority after stepping up from League Two to League One.
