Phil Parkinson about to make big Wrexham mistake, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds must intervene

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds should be wary of a call Phil Parkinson looks set to make at Wrexham.

It has been a busy week or so for Wrexham, who have faced some tough opposition and been dealt some big blows.

Wrexham beat Rotherham United 1-0 last Saturday before earning a 0-0 draw with Huddersfield Town at the Racecourse Ground on Tuesday evening.

After picking up four points against two of the top teams in League One, the Red Dragons are now preparing for another big clash on October 26th.

Wrexham face Charlton Athletic at The Valley on Saturday, looking to cap off an undefeated seven days in style.

Phil Parkinson will have to face Charlton without a few big names, however, as Jack Marriot is out for four months and Parkinson confirmed Steven Fletcher is injured as well.

This has seemingly seen Wrexham dip their toe into the free agent market to bolster their depleted striker ranks.

Wrexham target free agent striker for Phil Parkinson

Matty James is rumoured to be joining Wrexham and will bolster their midfield amid a long-term injury to George Evans.

Elsewhere, it has been reported, as covered by The Bolton News, that former Bolton centre-forward Jon Dadi Bodvarsson could also be set to join Wrexham as a free agent this week.

Parkinson plays with two strikers and at present, Paul Mullin, Ollie Palmer and summer addition Modou Faal are the only cover in that area.

This obviously means a free agent signing does make a lot of sense as Wrexham simply cannot rely on just three strikers to play twice a week until Marriott and or Fletcher return from injury in the future.

However, the rumoured addition of Bodvarsson could be a big mistake on the Wrexham manager’s part and owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds should step in to prevent the deal.

Why Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney should stop Wrexham signing Jon Dadi Bodvarsson

Bodvarsson spent the 2023/24 season plying his trade in League One with Parkinson’s former side Bolton.

However, the 32-year-old, despite playing 36 games, found the net on just four occasions across the previous campaign.

There is no question that cover up top is needed sooner rather than later but it should be pretty clear to Reynolds and McElhenney that there are much better options out there right now.

Even late in October, there are still at least a couple more free-agent strikers who would be better for Wrexham than the ex-Bolton man.

Martyn Waghorn also spent 2023/24 in the third tier and won promotion to the Championship with Derby County – experience that would be very useful to Wrexham this time around.

Furthermore, Waghorn managed a much better goal return than Bodvarsson, netting seven in 24 matches.

Kemar Roofe is another option for Wrexham, with fans probably somewhat surprised at the reports linking them to the rather underwhelming Bodvarsson and no doubt hoping their owners have a much better alternative in mind.
