Phil Parkinson must rip up tactical blueprint to unleash rarely-seen Wrexham partnership

Phil Parkinson can unleash a rarely-seen partnership at Wrexham when they face Leyton Orient this weekend, it could be game-changing.

It has been a fantastic start to the 2024/25 League One season for Phil Parkinson and his Red Dragons.

Wrexham beat Crawley Town 2-1 over the weekend, leaving them sitting at the summit of the third division after seven games.

However, Birmingham City beat Wrexham on Monday and are only behind the Welsh outfit via goal difference with a game in hand on the newly promoted side.

As a result, it is imperative the Dragons keep their winning start to the season going this weekend when they face off with Leyton Orient.

The Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds-owned club were not at 100 percent in their last clash, with Parkinson no doubt keen to see a better display when they travel away from the Racecourse Ground on Saturday, September 28th.

Why Phil Parkinson must rip up Wrexham tactical blueprint

One way Parkinson could get his side playing even better in the coming games is by ripping up his tactical blueprint.

Since his arrival in Wales back in 2022, Parkinson has always preferred a two-man strike force.

For the most part, that strike force has been made up of one big one and one little man.

Ollie Palmer and Paul Mullin have been his go-to pairing in the large majority of Wrexham fixtures and that duo have worked very well together.

However, the impressive form of Jack Marriott has surely done enough to convince Parkinson that a front two of Marriott and Mullin could work wonders for his side.

Why Paul Mullin and Jack Marriot could be key to Wrexham promotion push

Mullin was injured at the start of the 2024/25 campaign, leading Parkinson to be forced to start Marriott up front.

The 30-year-old endured a rough first six months in Wales, scoring just one in 17 League Two appearances following a winter transfer last season.

However, the striker scored four in six League One matches at the beginning of this campaign, with Parkinson’s decision to drop Marriott for Mullin deemed ‘harsh’.

The call just about worked out on Saturday, with Wrexham coming away with a 2-1 win.

Now though, Parkinson should consider starting both Mullin and Marriott for the meeting with Leyton Orient.

Mullin is Wrexham’s all-time top scorer with 101 goals and Marriott is in the goalscoring form of his life.

And with Palmer’s impact fading somewhat since the club’s promotion to the third tier, now may be the perfect time for Parkinson to rip up his tactical blueprint and start two smaller strikers together.

It is a risky choice to make, but if Marriott and Mullin can start bagging goals at the rates they have shown they are capable of, it would be massive for the club’s promotion push.

The pair have never really played together, with Marriott replacing Mullin off the bench versus Crawley, but if it works out, it will be game-changing for Wrexham.
