Phil Parkinson shares latest injury update on Wrexham defender Max Cleworth

Wrexham were without Max Cleworth for the trip to face Stevenage and Phil Parkinson has offered an update on his situation.

Wrexham made a second long journey in just a matter of days win Tuesday.

The 0-0 draw at Leyton Orient on Saturday wasn’t exactly the most entertaining game of the Phil Parkinson era.

After travelling to London and back over the weekend, Wrexham were back on the road again with a trip to Stevenage.

This was another fairly toothless Wrexham showing but whilst that was good enough for a point at Leyton Orient, it wasn’t the case against Stevenage.

Louis Thompson scored the only goal of the game, firing an low drive beyond the despairing dive of Arthur Okonkwo.

Phil Parkinson on Max Cleworth

Wrexham made a handful of changes for this game but just couldn’t find the killer moments in the final third.

One change was enforced as Parkinson had to make do without defender Max Cleworth.

The centre back picked up an ankle injury at Leyton Orient and was replaced in the back line by Dan Scarr.

Parkinson sounded downbeat on Cleworth’s situation over the weekend, believing that the injury ‘didn’t look good’.

Cleworth unsurprisingly missed the clash with Stevenage but there is some positive news.

Parkinson has told BBC Sport that Cleworth’s injury is ‘not as bad as we first feared’.

Parkinson added that Wrexham have a number of injury issues bubbling away ahead of this weekend’s game against Northampton Town at the STōK Cae Ras.

“We have had a decent run with injuries so far this season but one or two things have caught up with us a little bit now,” said Parkinson.

“We have to reassess a little bit and look ahead to the weekend,” he added.

Cleworth one of the first names on the teamsheet

Cleworth’s injury seemingly won’t keep him out long term, though he is still expected to miss out against Northampton.

Getting Cleworth back as quickly as possible is a real priority for Wrexham as he has become one of the key men for Parkinson.

Cleworth has progressed through the Wrexham ranks and really took his game to another level in League Two with Andy Morrell praising his potential.

Now thriving in League One as well, Cleworth is becoming an ideal right-sided centre back in a three-man defence.

Cleworth is strong and physical as a defender but also quick across the ground and capable of supporting attacks when required.

Still only 22, Cleworth has become a mainstay of the starting XI and will surely go straight back into the side whenever he returns.
