Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have unveiled plans to make Wrexham’s stadium capacity as high as 55,000.

The Racecourse Ground is already under redevelopment, with a new Kop Stand set to make the Red Dragons’ home a 16k-seater. But there are long-term goals in place for their Hollywood owners after back-to-back promotions to League One.

And they ultimately want to have one of the UK’s biggest stadiums, being able to welcome more fans than Stamford Bridge and Villa Park. McElhenney responded when asked if 16k was the sweet spot for the club.

He told Collider: “We have a plan in place right now that would eventually work from stand to stand, so eventually you get all four sides, and it’s hard to say for sure, but we think we could get between 45 and 55,000 people in there.”

“So like hardcore expansion,” responded the interviewer, before Reynolds chimed in: “Like the whole town could come to a game.”

Since their takeover in February 2021, they’ve bankrolled the team halfway to their aspiration of one day playing in the Premier League with investment on and off the pitch.

Naturally, the task will get harder the closer to the top tier they get, but there’s no doubt another busy summer transfer window is in store to bolster boss Phil Parkinson’s options.

It’s been less smooth sailing with the stadium, with delays impacting the Kop re-build. As a result, a temporary stand was introduced in December, meaning 12,562 were able to watch their season-concluding 2-1 win over Stockport County last weekend.

The project was hoped to be completed before the 2024/25 campaign got underway, but several issues scuppered that. It’s set to take a year when it does get going.
