Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney received a brutal message from former Sheffield United ace Billy Sharp when the two sides clashed in the FA Cup last year
Billy Sharp hit Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney with a ruthless five-word message after Sheffield United’s 2022/23 FA Cup clash with the Welsh side.
United faced the Red Dragons in the fourth round of the Cup in January 2023, which ultimately ended in a 3-3 draw at the Racecourse Ground after a fiery state of affairs which saw Daniel Jebbison sent off. And the replay at Bramall Lane didn’t disappoint either.
A goal from Anel Ahmedhodzic on the 50th minute put United in front, but Paul Mullin equalised just nine minutes later through a spot kick. The game looked to be another deadlock up until the 94th minute, when Sharp once again put the Blades in front before Sander Berge cemented a home win to dump Wrexham out of the FA Cup.
However, Sharp was less than impressed by how Wrexham’s social media team handled proceedings before a ball had been kicked. He explained: “I thought there was a lack of respect towards us. Whoever runs their Twitter account wants to be careful because they thought they were playing Spurs before they beat us.
“There were a few comments from their players which I won’t say, they know who they are. I’m glad we’ve beaten them tonight.” After his goal, Sharp made a crying gesture towards the Wrexham fans, which led to him and manager Phil Parkinson getting into it after the game.
Recalling the incident on Ben Foster’s Fozcast, he explained: “I went over to my mum, my dad, wife, kids, my friends, as I normally do. I blow my kids a kiss, getting coins, having a bit of banter. I do a little crying gesture to the Wrexham fans – which I could have done a lot worse.
“Parky comes running over – ‘What are you saying!’ He is giving it loads because I’m having a bit of banter and his team has just got knocked out, I’m happy we’ve gone through and spoiled the underdog story. I’ve had a bit of beef with Parky before. No grudge.
“There was no need for him to get involved after the game. He was trying to look out for his fans. Then Paul Mullin came across, that was fine and had a bit of banter with him. [Ben] Tozer was giving it all game. Not just me, most of the players.”
Things would escalate further when Sharp would cheekily shout “shove it on the documentary” in a tense face off heading down the tunnel post-match. And Parkinson explained that he was disappointed by how Sharp carried himself after the match, adding: “I was a bit disappointed with Billy to be honest – shouting down the tunnel.

“I think he was disrespectful. The message to Billy is: ‘You’re better than that. Our players are humble people’.” Sharp ultimately got his wish, with scenes from the FA Cup tie being shown in the popular Welcome To Wrexham documentary, however, Reynolds and McElhenney took the opportunity to snap back at the 38-year-old.
Reynolds said: “It was really interesting. It was psychology 1 on 1. It was like, ‘Oh, we own you right now. You’re a Championship team, and second place in the Championship, you guys are amazing. And this guy we just got under his skin.’ It was so, so wonderful to see that we got under that guy’s skin the way he did.”
Not one to mince his words, McElhenney added: “We were living rent free in that m***********’s brain.” Sharp left Sheffield United on a free transfer at the end of the 2022/23 season, making his way to LA Galaxy. His opinion of Wrexham seems to have cooled since meeting with them.
