Steve Evans admits big Rotherham United problem ahead of Wrexham clash, Phil Parkinson can take advantage

Wrexham will be back in League One action again next weekend as Phil Parkinson takes his side on the road to face Rotherham United.

Wrexham players will certainly have welcomed a weekend off.

This international break has given Wrexham players a chance to recharge after a fine start to the season.

Wrexham played in the last international break, beating rivals Shrewsbury Town 3-0 at the STōK Cae Ras.

This time though, Wrexham’s clash with Lincoln City was postponed due to international call-ups for the Imps.

Wrexham players have therefore had some time to rest and gear up for a big game at Rotherham United next weekend.

Steve Evans on Rotherham United defending ahead of Wrexham clash

Wrexham will be keen to resolve issues away from home.

Wrexham have claimed just one point from the last three away games and have won just once on the road in League One.

A trip to Rotherham United next weekend will not be easy but Wrexham will head to South Yorkshire with hope and belief of a result.

The Millers re-appointed Steve Evans at the end of last season and backed him with a raft of signings over the summer.

Rotherham have yet to really hit top form though and threw away a 3-1 lead at Peterborough United to draw 3-3 on Saturday.

Evans has now commented on his side’s performance and shared his biggest concern ahead of facing Wrexham.

As quoted by Vital Rotherham, Evans admitted that he is ‘concerned’ about Rotherham’s defending from set pieces.

Evans added that he would be disappointed as a Rotherham supporter and clearly wants an improvement ahead of facing Wrexham – the team he has called ‘the Harlem Globetrotters’.

“When you are three-one up this is two points dropped. We came here with a willingness to fight and I’m pleased that we’ve come away from home and displayed the spirit to get a point and try and win it and that’s not been here for such a long time, although I think the supporters will be disappointed,” said Evans.

“I’d be disappointed as a supporter. I’m concerned about our set play, our discipline of conceding two goals in such quick succession,” he added.

Music to Phil Parkinson’s ears

Evans is bound to put extra emphasis on set-piece defending ahead of facing Wrexham.

Peterborough’s first goal came from the second phase of a corner kick whilst the second and third came direct from corners.

Rotherham can’t keep conceding these goals but Wrexham will be desperate to pile on the misery from dead balls.

Wrexham are so good from set pieces and only two teams in League One have scored more goals from set pieces this season.

Phil Parkinson will really want Wrexham to be aggressive from set pieces against Rotherham and attempt to put them under huge pressure after Saturday’s capitulation.

Wrexham will get the ball into the box from dead balls and from open play with Ryan Barnett in great form up the right flank and if Rotherham can’t figure out their issues, Wrexham could run riot from set pieces.
