The surprise Welsh FA rule that could see players leave Wrexham before Deadline Day

The end of the transfer window is fast approaching and Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson will be looking to add the finishing touches to his business.

Wrexham completed most of their business before their 3-2 victory over Wycombe Wanderers as seven new players arrived at the Racecourse Ground.

Phil Parkinson focused most of his efforts on improving the goalkeeping department, defence and midfield as he aimed to get two quality players for each position.

The Wrexham boss would ideally still like to add a striker to his ranks but talks over a deal for Michael Smith have cooled, while they could still achieve a dream end to the transfer window by signing Bailey Cadamarteri on loan from Sheffield Wednesday.

While a new forward to support Paul Mullin is firmly on the agenda, several current players could leave before the deadline.

Phil Parkinson explains the Welsh FA rule that impacts Wrexham

Wrexham’s squad is bloated with talent, meaning capable players miss out on the team sheet each week.

In the reserves’ 3-2 win over Stoke City, Jake Bickerstaff scored a hat-trick playing alongside first-teamers Billy Waters, Anthony Forde and Jacob Mendy.

Whilst that was Mendy’s first match since recovering from injury, Waters and Forde were used as they’re no longer part of the matchday squad.

It is therefore likely that if an offer comes in for the forgotten duo, Parkinson will accept, especially because the Welsh FA rules state that clubs can’t loan players out to the National League after the window closes.

Speaking to The Leader, Parkinson explained: “There may be one or two leaving before the window closes.

“It’s a similar situation to Jordan. There are certain players who need to now go and push for a first-team place elsewhere, and that could happen before the window closes.

“With Welsh FA rules, after the window closes we can’t loan players out into the National League so the ones who we are looking to go into that level have to go before the window closes if they are going to go at all.”

Wrexham’s transfer window

For Wrexham to have the near-perfect transfer window, after signing seven new players, the Reds must add a capable striker to their ranks. Cadamarteri is the most likely arrival at the moment but anything can happen between now and deadline day.

Parkinson must also shift on multiple fringe players. Forde and Waters, in particular, are bottom of their respective pecking orders and need to seek regular football elsewhere.

Wrexham’s early success in the transfer window has ultimately rubbed off on their performances, with the Welsh side beating Wycombe Wanderers and drawing against promotion hopefuls Bolton.

It’s two results that have sparked hope of Parkinson’s men completing a third successive promotion, although you feel signing another striker could make all the difference.
