Wrexham are lining up a move for a Championship striker ahead of the transfer window closing.
Coming off the back of a 3-2 victory against Wycombe Wanderers, it proved that Wrexham’s quality and strength lies in their attacking ranks.
Even though Paul Mullin was absent from the squad, Wrexham managed to fire three past their League One counterparts, one of which was scored by Jack Marriott, who was given praise after the game by co-owner Rob McElhenney.
Steven Fletcher also bagged a goal after coming off the bench, further proving the incredible depth that Phil Parkinson has at his disposal when regarding the front line.
Despite this, Parkinson is looking to add yet another striker to his side with the 2024/25 League One season fully underway, and they have managed to target Championship talents.
Bailey Cadamarteri has been linked with a move to Wrexham, however another Sheffield Wednesday player has been tipped to leave Hillsborough, with the Reds interested in signing the attacker.
Wrexham interested in Michael Smith from Sheffield Wednesday
Wrexham are reportedly interested in signing Sheffield Wednesday striker Michael Smith, per The Star.
There have already been ‘talks between the two clubs’, with the Owls willing to sell players this summer.
Smith is reportedly hot property this summer due to the fact that Parkinson’s side ‘are not the only club to have expressed an interest’ in the striker, however Wrexham at this moment appear to be the ‘most likely destination’ at this moment in time.
The Sheffield Wednesday striker has been praised in the past by manager Danny Rohl, per Joe Crann on X, for his ‘strong’ play and physique whilst fashioning his trade in the Championship.
Michael Smith has proven League One record that Wrexham will benefit from
When it comes to proven goal scoring ability at League One level, you don’t get much better than Smith.
The 32-year-old has been clinical in his last two League One seasons, scoring 34 goals across two campaigns with Rotherham United and Sheffield Wednesday, and there is no doubt that Smith fits the mould of the sort of striker that thrives under Parkinson.
The striker is of a similar style to talisman Fletcher in the sense of being a goal-hungry poacher that can be deadly from set-pieces.
Smith has been out of favour under Rohl at Sheffield Wednesday, however still managed to score four goals in the 2023/24 Championship season, and that level of player will certainly be able to perform to a high level in League One.
Whilst striker signings shouldn’t be of utmost importance for Parkinson’s side, the signing of Smith will be quite a coup for the new League One outfit, and one they will likely be able to get for a cut-price with him entering the final year of his contract.
