Two Premier League targets that should be on Wrexham AFC’s radar this week

Wrexham AFC have experienced a hectic summer transfer window so far, with plenty of comings and goings at the Racecourse Ground.

The Red Dragons let several players go at the end of last season after achieving automatic promotion from League Two, with first-team captain Luke Young and club captain Ben Tozer both released.

Meanwhile, Phil Parkinson has made a total of seven signings to date, including Ollie Rathbone from Rotherham United for a club-record transfer fee, as well as goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo from Arsenal following a successful loan spell last term.

Wrexham have enjoyed an encouraging start to life in League One after winning their opening day tie against Wycombe Wanderers 3-2 at home, followed by a 0-0 draw at promotion-chasing Bolton Wanderers last weekend.

Parkinson told BBC Sport this week that he will “wait and see” whether he will be able to add to his squad further before deadline day.

As the transfer window enters its last week, Football League World looks at two Premier League players the North Wales side should have on their radar.

Alfie Devine

Tottenham Hotspur midfield starlet Alfie Devine is a player the Wrexham manager should definitely consider as he looks to add attacking quality.

Parkinson lost out in his pursuit of Luton’s John McAtee to Bolton earlier this month and the 20-year-old would represent a more cost-effective alternative.

Devine featured several times for Spurs’ first team during their pre-season friendlies after fruitful loan periods at then-League One outfit Port Vale and Championship side Plymouth Argyle during the 2023-24 season.

Alfie Devine’s Plymouth Argyle 2023/24 Championship Stats
Appearances 15
Starts 9
Assists 2
Key passes per game 0.7
Passing accuracy 75%
Fouls drawn per game 1.2
Stats correct as per Sofascore

However, as reported by The Standard, he is one of four youngsters expected to head out on loan before the end of the month to continue their development.

Parkinson would face competition if he did choose to bring Devine in, with Championship team Sheffield Wednesday also said to be interested in acquiring his services, as per The Star.

Wrexham are an ambitious club though and the midfielder would add extra creativity to their midfield.

Their manager has also shown he can bring youngsters through, including academy product Max Cleworth, as well as helping to kick-start Okonkwo’s career in senior football last season.

It would therefore be a move which would make sense for both Wrexham and Spurs.

Leon Chiwome

Wolverhampton Wanderers Leon Chiwome

The Red Dragons have repeatedly been linked with strikers this summer and Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Leon Chiwome is a forward with bags of potential.

The 18-year-old signed a new four-year deal after featuring four times for the club last season, including two Premier League starts, and has also represented England at youth level.

Speaking about Chiwome’s potential, Wolves’ sporting director Matt Hobbs told the club’s official website: “Leon stepped up last year in a tough time, when we had some injuries, and showed the potential that he has.

“He’s still at the start of his journey, with loads to learn and loads of development still to come, but to secure him to a long-term contract which allows us to go through that development cycle with him is obviously great for the football club.”

Speaking in June, Hobbs said the plan was for the striker to train with Wolves’ first-team and play with the under-21s this season, but did not rule out a possible loan move.

Hull City and Blackburn Rovers are among the clubs reported to be keeping tabs on Chiwome, as per GiveMeSport.

However, his physical attributes would make him well-suited to Parkinson’s system, and provide much-needed competition for Ollie Palmer in the number nine role.

He would also be more likely to gain the minutes he needs to further his development with Wrexham in the third tier than in the Championship.
