Wrexham target Michael Smith left out of Sheffield Wednesday squad vs Grimsby
For the past few weeks, Wrexham have been chasing a move for Sheffield Wednesday striker Michael Smith.
Wrexham was described as the ‘most likely destination’ for Smith at the start of August but once the season kicked off, the chances of a move happening decreased.
The 32-year-old target man came off the bench to score against Plymouth Argyle in the league and started the Carabao Cup clash at Hull City before being used as a substitute in defeats to Sunderland and Leeds.
Smith appeared to regularly feature in Danny Rohl’s plans but an update last week suggested that may not be the case beyond the window as Wednesday looked to sign a striker before the deadline.
Now, the German tactician has provided an update on the forward’s future after he was left out of the Owl’s matchday squad for the 5-1 win against Grimsby Town.
Speaking to the Sheffield Star, Rohl said: “He trained in the morning. “Let’s see with Michael what happens there.
“In the morning I had a good conversation with him, he is a great character and in January we made a decision and he played a lot in the second leg. Maybe more than he expected. Let’s see where we are on Friday and when you can ask me again with transfers.”

Sheffield Wednesday progressed through to the Carabao Cup third round last night and many Wednesday supporters would have expected to see Smith in the starting XI.
The fact he was left out completely, along with Rohl’s update on the Englishman, suggests he could be pushing for an exit before the deadline.
Smith is poised to spend most of the season benched at Hillsborough unless he finds an exit route out of the club, and Wrexham could provide him with that.
A serial goalscorer in League One, the strikers’ goals at Rotherham and Wednesday have fired the clubs to promotion in his previous two campaigns at this level.
Smith returned an impressive 34 goals across those seasons in the third tier, and with Wrexham looking to escape at the first time of asking, he would be the perfect signing.
The experienced centre-forward could form a mouth-watering partnership with Paul Mullin, who would benefit from his partners’ physical presence and scoring expertise on the pitch.
