Wrexham make Ryan Barnett contract decision

There had been some concern over the contract situation of Ryan Barnett.

The Wrexham wing back was simply sensational against Northampton Town, racking up three assists and helping set up the other goal in a 4-1 win.

George Dobson and Humphrey Ker hailed Barnett whilst James McClean has hailed the former Shrewsbury Town ace as ‘absolutely brilliant’.

Officially out of contract at the end of this season, there had been some fear that Barnett could end up leaving.

However, reporter Rich Fay from the Rob Ryan Red Podcast notes that Barnett’s contract now actually runs until the summer of 2026.

A one-year extension clause in Barnett’s contract was automatically activated at the back end of last season.

That means Barnett’s immediate future is no concern for Wrexham – and that is the perfect news as we head towards 2025.

Barnett news the biggest boost for Wrexham

Barnett has been so good up the right flank this season, taking his game to another level after playing regularly in League Two last term.

The 25-year-old offers pace and a real driving force out wide whilst having the quality with his crossing to set up big chances.

Wrexham brought in Luke Bolton in January but he hasn’t really come close to taking Barnett’s spot in the starting lineup.

Barnett is exactly what Parkinson wants at wing back and having his future secured ahead of the January transfer window is simply perfect.

Wrexham would have been reluctant to sell in January anyway but Barnett would have been able to sign a pre-contract agreement elsewhere in January had he been inside the final six months of his contract.

Teams in Scotland would surely have looked into such a deal but Wrexham don’t have to worry about that prospect and the news of his extended stay is simply perfect right now.
