Wrexham now to sign wonderful 27-goal striker who Phil Parkinson wanted in 2023

Wrexham could sign a striker this summer who Phil Parkinson wanted in last year’s summer transfer window.

Wrexham received their fixture list for the 2024/25 season on Wednesday morning to go with the news that Arthur Okonkwo signed a three-year contract.

Phil Parkinson made capturing the 22-year-old his priority and now they’ve got their man, attention can turn to other positions.

A centre-back or two is needed after releasing Ben Tozer, Aaron Hayden and Jordan Tunnicliffe at the end of their contracts while cover at left-back, central midfield and striker is equally important.

Wrexham currently have seven strikers at the club but need to shift on Billy Waters, Jake Bickerstaff and Sam Dalby, either on loan or permanently.

That could then allow them to sign a proven League One goal machine, perhaps revisiting one they attempted to sign in 2023.

Wrexham tried to sign Charlton striker Alfie May in 2023

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney were in the market for a new striker last summer and as reported by the Express, one of their targets was Alfie May.

Fresh from firing 43 goals in two League One campaigns for Cheltenham Town, May was hot property and Wrexham attempted to pull off an ambitious move for the Englishman.

That unfortunately never materialised as Charlton snapped up the 30-year-old in July 2023 for a reported fee of £250,000.

May continued his rich vein of goalscoring in the third tier by plundering 27 goals in all competitions for the Addicks, a return that earned him the division’s Golden Boot Award.

Just a year on from signing for Charlton, the lethal striker could be on his way out of South London.

Why Wrexham could sign Alfie May this summer

Although Charlton boss Nathan Jones has insisted he’s “under zero pressure” to sell any of his players – including top scorer May – that narrative could change depending on what offers are placed on the table.

Fellow League One rivals Huddersfield Town have already seen a bid rejected for the striker and with his contract expiring in 2025, the South London club could engineer a sale.

Charlton have made their stance clear that they don’t want to sell the player but his contract situation leaves him at risk of departing on a free next summer, and Wrexham should therefore test the waters with a bid.

Parkinson desperately wanted to add a striker to his ranks after winning promotion to League Two and although he settled for Steven Fletcher, he needs guaranteed goals in the third tier.
