Wrexham release list of 3 stars to consider amid midfielder links as perfect Joe Morrell alternatives

Wrexham have been credited with an interest in midfielder Joe Morrell this summer along with QPR and Birmingham City, as per reporter Phil Cadden on X.

Wrexham could try and lure the Wales international to the Racecourse Ground as they prepare for life in League One. They went up from League Two last season along with Stockport County, Wrexham and Mansfield Town.

Morrell, 27, is out of contract at Portsmouth and is facing an uncertain future with the Fratton Park club. He helped them gain promotion to the Championship under John Mousinho after they won the title but he will be weighing up his options right now.

The Ipswich-born has also played for the likes of Bristol City, Sutton United, Cheltenham Town, Lincoln City and Luton Town in the past.

Here is a look at three players the Red Dragons could target if they are not able to get him…

Greg Docherty

He has cut ties with Hull City this summer and is available for nothing. The Scotsman, who has been on the books at Rangers in the past, would be a shrewd signing by Wrexham if they were able to tempt him to move down a division.

The midfielder helped the Tigers win the third tier title back in 2021 under their former manager Grant McCann, who is now at Doncaster Rovers. His game time at the MKM Stadium dried up in the last campaign, hence why he was released.

Wrexham, 3 Joe Morrell alternatives Wrexham should consider amid midfielder links

George Byers

Sheffield Wednesday have parted ways with the former Scotland youth international and he should be on Phil Parkinson’s radar. He joined the Owls in 2021 after stints at Watford, Swansea City and Portsmouth and went on to make 78 appearances in all competitions, chipping in with 14 goals.

The Londoner played a key role in their promotion in 2023 after they beat Barnsley in the play-off final. He spent the second-half of last term at Blackpool on loan after joining the Tangerines in January.

Jensen Weir

At the age of 22, he could do with leaving Brighton and Hove Albion on a permanent basis. His chances of breaking into the first-team at the AMEX Stadium are slim in the Premier League.

Weir has had loan spells away from the Seagulls at Cambridge United, Morecambe, Blackpool and Port Vale to get experience in the Football League. He would be a solid acquisition by Wrexham and would add more depth to their midfield department.
