Wrexham star George Dobson has done something that no other player in England has managed this season

Wrexham midfielder George Dobson has seriously impressed since signing on a free transfer this summer.

Dobson was one of nine signings Wrexham made this summer and alongside Arthur Okonkwo, has arguably been the most important.

The 26-year-old has played in every single minute of their seven League One matches so far, with Dobson standing out as one of the finest defensive midfielders in the division.

Taking responsibility for breaking up play at the base of midfield and flexing his impressive passing range, Dobson recorded his second assist of the season on Saturday, as Max Cleworth’s late goal secured a win over Crawley Town.

The former Charlton Athletic captain sent in a beautifully whipped cross, a sign that he’s capable of magic to go with his exceptional defensive work.

George Dobson’s incredible Wrexham statistics

Primarily brought in as a defensive ball-winner in Phil Parkinson’s 3-5-2 system, Dobson’s work rate and tackling ability have helped Wrexham record five wins from seven matches.

Sitting top of League One just ahead of Birmingham City on goal difference, the Welsh outfit have made a fantastic start following promotion and shown their strength defensively.

Despite conceding three goals in the loss to Birmingham a week ago, Wrexham have kept four clean sheets in seven matches, which included a 2-0 win over promotion rivals Peterborough.

The Englishman’s role in the side has proven vital to producing a solid defensive base. In August’s win over Reading, Dobson made more tackles than any other player in the EFL that weekend.

Now, according to Opta statistics, Dobson is the only player across England’s top four leagues to have racked up 10+ interceptions, 25+ tackles and 45+ ball recoveries in 2024/25.

For a side who have scored the most goals in League One this season (14), that is an impressive feat from the Wrexham midfielder, who continues to go from strength to strength.

George Dobson is one of Wrexham’s biggest bargains

Dobson was supposed to join Hungarian side Fehervar at the start of July but personal terms broke down and fortunately, Wrexham were able to snap him up.

Since then, he’s shown his pedigree as one of the third tier’s best midfield destroyers whose experience at this level has proven invaluable.

The English midfielder had accumulated 265 League One appearances for Charlton before leaving the Valley in June, with Dobson leaving the captain’s armband behind.

To sign that level of player following promotion was a show of their intent to challenge the division’s best while landing him for free made the transfer taste even sweeter.

Dobson is certainly one of Wrexham’s biggest bargain signings in recent times as he’s perfectly slotted into the midfield and the dressing room culture.
