Wrexham in Welsh League Cup talks as Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds eye potential European route

Wrexham are hoping to end up in the Premier League one day but may soon have a route into European football.

Wrexham’s rise under Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds has been remarkable to watch in recent years.

McElhenney and Reynolds have put Wrexham on an entirely new path and have risen from the National League to League One in rapid fashion.

Wrexham had been stuck in the National League for more than a decade and any Premier League aspirations were a mere pipe dream.

That has all changed now with Wrexham becoming one of the most talked-about clubs in the game thanks to the club’s Hollywood ownership.

Reynolds wants another promotion this season and Lee Trundle is predicting a potential Premier League future for Wrexham.

Wrexham in talks over potential European route

The buzz around Wrexham is enormous and the club is now in talks over a potentially fascinating step.

BBC Sport report that Wrexham are in talks over participating in the Welsh League Cup – which would present a route into the UEFA Conference League.

Cardiff City, Newport County and Swansea City – other Welsh clubs playing in the English Football League – are also in talks over joining too.

There is a catch though; participating in this competition would sacrificing potential qualification through English competitions.

Swansea qualified for the Europa League after winning the EFL Cup in 2013 and that would no longer be possible for any club who joins the Welsh competition.

It’s claimed that Wrexham – and the other three clubs involved – have already presented this vision to UEFA, The FA, the Premier League and Welsh top flight clubs.

That suggests that this idea is fairly well established now with Wrexham serious about a potentially enormous decision.

Whether Welsh Premier League clubs would be so interested is another matter.

Bringing EFL sides into the mix could hamper the hopes of Welsh Premier League sides in the Welsh League Cup and there could yet be some opposition to the proposal.

Wrexham will certainly fancy a deep run in the Welsh League Cup if this idea comes to fruition.

Phil Parkinson’s side are stronger than Newport right now and may even fancy taking on Championship sides Cardiff and Swansea.

The team to beat from the Welsh Premier League is The New Saints, who have won five of the last nine Welsh League Cup finals.

Connah’s Quay Nomads won two in a row whilst Cardiff Met and Bala Town picked up one each.

The New Saints fell out of Champions League and Europa League qualification over the summer but are in the Conference League league phase.

Seeing Wrexham in European action would be another huge step on this incredible journey – and it may be a more realistic possibility than many would have thought even a week ago.
