Aston Villa player ratings v Wolves: Ollie Watkins flops, Moussa Diaby

Aston Villa continued to keep their Champions League hopes on track as they secured a 2-0 victory over Wolves at Villa Park.

The Midlands derby lived up to its billing but it was Unai Emery’s side that came away with the three points from the game.

Moussa Diaby and Ezri Konsa found the back of the net for the hosts as they picked up an important win on Saturday, 30 March.

Here are our player ratings:

Emi Martinez – 7

Made a handful of important saves and according to Sofascore, was inch-perfect with his passing as well, achieving an accuracy of 93 per cent. The only three passes he failed to complete were long passes because apart from that, there was no mistake made by the Argentine.

Konsa an unlikely Aston Villa goal scorer

Ezri Konsa – 8

Found himself in an unfamiliar position even though it was the right place at the right time. Not known for his goal-scoring exploits, it was a terrific way to put some daylight between them and their opponents. Defensively too, he was at it and was tidy in possession, achieving an accuracy close to 95 per cent.

Diego Carlos – 7

A passing accuracy of 94 per cent in the Premier League is always a good return and the Brazilian centre-back was solid once again at the back for Aston Villa. He was seldom found out of position and Emery will have little, if anything to fault from his performance.

Pau Torres – 5

Usually neat and tidy with his passes, it wasn’t the best of games for Torres. While he fulfilled his defensive duties well, he struggled with his long passing, failing to complete none of his five attempts. His accuracy was under 90 per cent and against a better side, it could’ve cost him.

Alex Moreno – 5

While he can be pleased with his pass accuracy of 100 per cent, he attempted four crosses and failed to complete even a single one of them. It already seemed the wrong decision when he started over Lucas Digne, and there was more of an attacking threat when the Frenchman came on.

Youri Tielemans – 7

Was the enforcer in midfield and went on about his business well. His range of passing was exceptional and he was always there providing cover alongside Douglas Luiz. He even won both of his aerial duels and it was an impressive all-round performance.

Douglas Luiz – 6

Had a few shaky moments in midfield but it was nothing that put his side in serious harm’s way. He won seven of his attempted 13 ground duels and even made a key pass that could’ve led to something special. Not his best Villa performance but he’s set the bar that high and is now held to a higher standard.

Leon Bailey – 6

Lost 12 out of his 18 ground duels but showed a willingness to fight for the ball out of possession and did a job when given the ball. He made two key passes in the game and succeeded with the majority of his dribbles and performances like this will ensure his stock keeps rising.

Diaby scored a wonder goal for Aston Villa

Moussa Diaby – 9

Set up Konsa’s goal very well after finding the back of the net himself in the first half for Villa. He also had a 100 per cent success rate with his dribbles. An important performance from the 24-year-old who started off as a number 10 but drifted into space, having touches all over.

Morgan Rogers – 7

In a game where he completed just seven passes with an accuracy of 70 per cent, he managed to complete all of his five dribble attempts. Whenever he received the ball on the left flank, the Wolves defenders retreated as he could beat them for pace and trickery. He did his job for the 63 minutes he was on the field.

Ollie Watkins – 3

Had an underwhelming game, or rather half for Villa as he was taken off at the break. He managed to muster just one shot on goal and struggled to get involved in proceedings. He could only make 12 touches in the game, completing seven passes and that’s very low for someone who likes being involved.
